Sparkling water has become the beverage choice of people trying to cut back on soda while maintaining the carbonated experience. And with it has come the recurring question: is it acidic and does it damage teeth? The short answer is that sparkling water is slightly acidic and the evidence suggests that for most people drinking it in reasonable amounts poses minimal risk to dental enamel especially compared to the drinks it is replacing.
The chemistry
When carbon dioxide dissolves in water it forms carbonic acid making carbonated water slightly acidic with a typical pH of around 3.5 to 4.5 for plain sparkling water depending on the brand and carbonation level. For comparison still water has a pH of approximately 7, orange juice is around pH 3.5 to 4, and cola sodas are around pH 2.5 to 3. Sparkling water is at the milder end of the acidic drink spectrum.
What the enamel research shows
A frequently cited study in the British Dental Journal found that sparkling water was 100 times less erosive than orange juice and 40 times less erosive than cola while still causing some degree of enamel softening. Laboratory studies typically involve prolonged soaking of enamel specimens in conditions that do not replicate how most people actually consume drinks. Epidemiological evidence has not produced strong clinical evidence linking regular plain sparkling water consumption to clinically significant enamel erosion in adults with normal salivary function.
When sparkling water does pose more risk
Flavored sparkling waters with citrus flavors or citric acid are meaningfully more erosive than plain sparkling water. Check the ingredient list: if it contains citric acid the pH will be significantly lower. Consuming sparkling water with lime or lemon squeezed in similarly increases erosive potential. Sipping acidic drinks slowly over extended periods is more damaging than drinking the same volume quickly. People with pre-existing enamel erosion or acid reflux may be more vulnerable to even mild acids.
Practical guidance
Plain sparkling water without added acids is a reasonable choice for most adults. Flavored sparkling waters with citric acid are better treated more like juice and consumed occasionally rather than constantly. Waiting 30 minutes after consumption before brushing avoids brushing softened enamel. The comparison that matters most: virtually anything replacing regular soda is a net positive for dental health.
