If you have ever owned a tongue scraper and used it consistently for a few days you have noticed what comes off. A white or yellowish coating of considerable volume. A 2006 Cochrane review on interventions for bad breath concluded that tongue scrapers reduced VSCs more effectively than toothbrushing alone. Multiple clinical trials confirm that adding tongue cleaning to a regular oral hygiene routine provides incremental benefit for halitosis reduction beyond what brushing and flossing achieve.
How to do it effectively
Do it before brushing in the morning. Stick out the tongue fully and position the scraper as far back as you can comfortably place it without gagging. Apply light pressure and draw the scraper forward. Rinse and repeat three to five times. This takes about 30 seconds. Metal scrapers are preferable to plastic. Some initial gag reflex is normal and reduces with consistent practice over a week or two.
